Sustainability at da Vinci Days involves multiple components.
The da Vinci Days Sustainability Committee targeted waste reduction
as a key goal for 2010 and we built on that success in 2011
with the Green Star Pilot program, which was a new opportunity
for food vendors.
The 2012 festival is proud to announce that all Vendors will be
participating in the Green Star Program, meaning a
compost cart and recycling cart will be provided behind
each vendor booth. This way the waste will be futher reduced
at the festival by providing food vendors to compose behind the
scenes, in addition to the compost friendly practices that continue
this year..
Starting in 2010, we collected compost at the festival to
reduce waste. Our food vendors served food and beverages in
compostable serving ware - material made from plant starches that
biodegrade naturally. Recycling stations were located throughout
the event with friendly volunteers helping attendees sort materials
into the right bin. Our
2010 Waste
Initiative Report is available for review.
Thank you to our key partners
OSU Campus Recycling
for coordinating the collection of material and to
Allied Waste for picking up
material to be composted at the Pacific Regional Compost
Facility.
We also introduced three new monster characters, to provide
fun and iconic signage for the trash, recycling, and composting
containers at the festival. Meet (left to right), Lil Eddy Trash
Boy, Mile the Recycler, and Denson the Compost Monster.
