Papa Mau: The Wayfinder
Naalehu Anthony
DOCUMENTARY
In the 1970s, a group of Hawaiians, fearing their Polynesian
culture was in danger of being lost, embarked on an adventure to
sail to Tahiti in the manner of their ancestors. Building a
voyaging canoe was easy, but the ancient art of non-instrument
navigation appeared to have been lost. Finally, the group found Mau
Piailug, a fisherman living on a tiny island in Micronesia. But
sailing to Tahiti is one thing; reviving a culture is another thing
entirely. PAPA MAU: THE WAYFINDER tells the 30-year story of a
cultural revival as Mau teaches a new generation the art of
navigation, reminding his students that in order to know where you
are going, it can be just as important to know where you've
been.
